Sorbent innovation driving low-cost Direct Air Capture.

Ideal for Direct Air Capture (DAC) and low-CO2 applications, our sorbent technologies provide a reliable and effective solution for tackling carbon emissions. DAC lab-scale piloting and process modeling validated high productivity of CO2 adsorption and low energy requirement for regeneration, facilitating a significant reduction in the cost of capture. Thermal and oxidative stability testing confirmed high absolute uptake over extended use.

Frequently Asked Questions.

What is Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology?

Direct Air Capture (DAC) is a technology that removes carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the atmosphere. It uses specialized equipment to filter air and extract CO2, which can then be stored underground or used in various applications. DAC is considered a crucial tool for addressing climate change, particularly in tackling historical emissions and achieving net-zero goals by 2050.

DAC has distinct characteristics compared to other methods. It works with very dilute CO2 in ambient air (about 0.04%), which makes it currently more expensive than many nature-based solutions. However, DAC requires less land than methods like afforestation and offers high permanence when combined with geological storage. It also provides highly verifiable carbon removal. Our mission at Dotz is to reduce the costs of DAC through sorbent innovation.

The current costs of DAC are high compared to other carbon removal options. However, costs are expected to decrease due to technological improvements, economies of scale, and increased investment. Government support and programs aim to reduce costs, with targets like achieving under $100/t CO2. Market drivers like synthetic fuel applications could accelerate cost reductions. Innovative business models are emerging to address upfront cost barriers.

Dotz’s sorbents are specifically designed to be effective for Direct Air Capture, where CO2 concentrations are extremely low (about 0.04% in ambient air). The high selectivity and adsorption capacity of these sorbents allow them to efficiently capture CO2 even at these trace levels. Additionally, their potential applicability to low-CO2 flue gas applications demonstrates versatility in addressing carbon emissions from various sources.

Dotz’s Direct Air Capture technology has been demonstrated at a lab-scale rig, placing it at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4. This indicates that the key components of the system have been validated in a laboratory environment, providing a solid foundation for further development and scaling. The next steps would involve moving towards pilot-scale demonstrations and field testing.

By combining high CO2 adsorption productivity with low energy requirements for regeneration, Dotz’s sorbents address two critical factors in DAC economics. The high productivity means more CO2 can be captured per unit of sorbent, while the low energy demand for regeneration significantly reduces operational costs. These factors together facilitate a substantial reduction in the overall cost of capture, which is crucial for making DAC economically viable at scale.
